Background:

Established in 1973 as an English-medium comprehensive school, Penglais is set in extensive grounds adjacent to University of Wales, Aberystwyth. Dating from the 1950's, the original buildings were augmented by a big extension in the 1970's. A purpose built sixth form centre for 300 students is planned for 2006. Pupils have access to a full-size recently-renovated sports hall, gymnasium, two rugby pitches, two hockey pitches, artificial test cricket pitch, a floodlit hard-court area. Recent facilities include a design technology block, new canteen and kitchen, languages teaching block, and new PE changing rooms. In addition to its academic record, the school is proud of its musical tradition: its choirs and orchestra perform regularly at national level.
